How many calories should I eat?

Posted on 06 February 2012

I’m aiming to answer the question, “how much calories should I intake each day in order to lose weight?”

This is a very common question, which isn’t surprising as modern health authorities are constantly saying that people eat too many calories each day and should cut back.

I have a difficult time doing this, since, in my opinion, calorie counting is not that vital. Obesity has raised even though almost everybody owns a calculator and can do math.

While it may be true that calorie count is important, this isn’t too vital for normal people like you and me.

For now, let’s assume that the “calories in, calories out” theory works and that you might just shed weight by just stopping eating your favorite foods (fast foods, for example).

This theory tells us that people are becoming obese since they eat more food than they “burn” food. The calorie content of those extra food are then transformed by the body into fat, giving our body additional weight and will later lead to obesity.

If you were to drop 30 pounds with this technique and targeting a 500 calorie deficit a day, then you would have to weigh almost every piece of food you eat and calculate the calories in it, every day for 7 months.

Let’s think that you’ve an insanely strong willpower and are willing to let yourself go through many months of feeling hungry and energy deprived. Do you think you will be good to go after that?

Because if you desire to lose fat, you’ve no choice but to do this otherwise, you will gain all the weight that you’ve lost.

Additionally there’re several issues with calorie counting:

The body’s metabolism depends upon lots of factors: weight, genetics, age, sex, height as well as other factors.

The metabolic rate changes over time and it will drop during long periods of calorie restriction.

The brain controls body fat levels, and it’ll increase your hunger and reduce your activity levels to try and resist any changes.

Having to weigh every food you eat will be a huge obligation in your life. You won’t be able to eat out at restaurants or other peoples houses, and it is just downright annoying and unsustainable.

Definitely, this is a recipe for disaster. People would not wish to weigh in and count the number of calories they’ll intake on every food they consume, that is required if they desire to lose their weight this way.

Additionally, I believe that the entirety of the human race can not control their desires, and that includes food consumption.

I am going to discuss a specific hormone in your body that you have probably heard of before. It is known as Insulin.

As you might know, Insulin is used for regulating one’s blood sugar levels, stopping people from being a diabetic.

What insulin also does, is to function as a gatekeeper to your fat cells.

When insulin levels are elevated, the body’s fat cells are told to store fat and to ensure that whatever amount of fat already in them doesn’t get out.

If levels of insulin are high even though you’re eating less calories than you burn, then your body fat will have a real hard time getting away from your fat cells.

This will then make alert your body, and your brain as well, that it’s deprived of energy.

The end result: hunger.

The best option to this is to select the foods that do not contain too much content of something that impacts insulin release.

The macronutrient which releases the greatest amount of insulin is carbohydrate. A drop in carbs intake reduces insulin levels.

In this way, many of the fat stored in the body are burned and the feeling of hunger goes away. This is confirmed by researchers and experts.

Hunger for food will then disappear, and the body will instead use the extra fat as energy for the whole body.

Remember, weight loss isn’t really affected by calories, but rather, the kind of foods that we eat and foods that encourage weight reduction.
